In 2020, Walt Disney Pictures will release the action-adventure film Mulan, which will be directed by Niki Caro and written by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Lauren Hynek, and Elizabeth Martin. It is a live-action recreation of the same animated Disney movie from 1998. Hua Mulan, a courageous young lady who poses as a male to serve in the army in place of her father, is portrayed in the film by Liu Yifei.

The story, which takes place in ancient China, centres on Mulan as she undergoes training to become a warrior and aids in defending her nation against the Rouran army's invasion. Mulan's quest involves more than simply physical prowess; it also involves self-discovery and accepting who she is and what she can do. The film is a celebration of women's resilience, bravery, and strength in the face of hardship.

Fans of the original animated feature and those who wanted to see strong female representation in Hollywood eagerly anticipated the film. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was initially scheduled to be released in March 2020 but was repeatedly postponed. On September 4, 2020, Disney+ finally made it available as a premium video.

Both critics and viewers had conflicting opinions about the film. Some people criticised the movie for losing the musical numbers and humour of the original animated picture, despite the fact that many people applauded the cast's performances and the magnificent visuals. Also, several viewers were dissatisfied that the talking dragon from the original movie, Mushu, was left out of the remake.

Mulan was a commercial success, earning over $350 million globally, despite the negative reviews. Also, it received a nomination for a 93rd Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The absence of musical numbers is one of the primary distinctions between the live-action version and the original animated feature. Mulan is accompanied by numerous musical pieces in the animated movie, including the well-known "I'll Make a Man Out of You" and "Reflection." The live-action remake, on the other hand, omits the musical numbers and instead concentrates on the story's drama and action.

The way Mulan's character is portrayed is another obvious distinction. The live-action remake depicts her as a serious and determined fighter in contrast to the animation film's portrayal of her as a more lighthearted and amusing figure. This modification reflects the producers' intention to emphasise the character's journey of self-discovery and empowerment while also making the character more accessible and realistic.

The movie also had great performances from the supporting cast, including Donnie Yen as Commander Tung, Tzi Ma as Mulan's father Hua Zhou, and Gong Li as Xianniang (a brand-new character created for the movie), in addition to Liu Yifei's portrayal of Mulan.

Mulan is a visually magnificent and powerful film that honours the bravery and strength of women. Although some fans of the original animated movie may have had higher expectations, it is nonetheless a valuable addition to the Disney canon and a potent example of female empowerment in film. Mulan is unquestionably worth seeing if you're seeking for an action-packed adventure with a strong and inspirational female heroine.
